Rank #1 on Google Maps for Your Trade

TradesPro: building websites for Australian tradies since 2026

Why Some Tradies Rank #1 and Others Stay Invisible

We studied 1,000 organic Google Maps placements across plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, and pest control. The finding: more reviews does not automatically mean a higher ranking.

71%
Of searches had a lower-ranked business with MORE reviews than #1
97.5
Median top-3 review count for #1 ranked profiles (positions 4-10: just 28)
54
Median photo count for #1 profiles (positions 2-10: just 20)

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is fixed: the customer is where they are. Your job is to make the business easier to match to a search, and easier for a customer to trust.

Step 1: Copy the Categories Google Already Rewards

Time: 30 minutes.

Search Google Maps for five phrases that should produce a call for your business today. For a plumber in Sydney: "emergency plumber Sydney" and "water heater repair Sydney."

Open the top three profiles for each search and record their primary and secondary categories. Then:

  • Pick the most specific primary category that describes the real business.
  • Add secondary categories only for services you actually sell.
  • Repeat the search from the target area. Maps results change with distance.

If the businesses above you all use "Plumber" while your profile says "Contractor," you have given Google a harder matching problem. Google confirms categories affect local ranking.

Step 2: Fix the Name and Website Match

Time: 25 minutes.

Your profile name should match your storefront, website, invoices, and paperwork. If the business is Lakeview Plumbing, use Lakeview Plumbing. Do not rename it "Lakeview Emergency Plumber Sydney" to squeeze in a keyword. Google can edit or suspend a profile whose name does not match the real business.

Put the service and location on the website instead:

  • Page title: "Emergency plumber in Sydney | Lakeview Plumbing"
  • URL: /emergency-plumber-sydney/
  • Opening line: "24-hour plumbing repairs across Sydney"
  • Link that page from the profile when it is the best page for that service

The profile and the page now describe the same business, service, and city without a fake name.

Step 3: Complete Every Field a Customer Can Use

Time: 35 minutes.

Open Edit profile and finish the fields Google gives your category: address or service area, hours, phone, website, appointment link, services, attributes, and description. Then upload real photos from recent jobs. A water heater install in Parramatta tells a customer more than a stock photo of a wrench.

Use the same service names on the profile and matching website pages. If the profile says "Drain cleaning" while the site only talks about "plumbing solutions," Google and the customer both have to guess.

Step 4: Ask for Reviews That Contain Real Detail

Time: 20 minutes.

Send the direct Google review link or QR code after every completed job. Ask for an honest review and make the prompt easy to answer: "What did we help with, where was the job, and what stood out?"

A useful review might say the team replaced a hot water system in Penrith and arrived the same afternoon. The service and location appear because that is what happened, not because the customer copied a keyword script.

Never offer a discount, gift, or free service for a Google review. Google treats incentives as fake engagement, even when the review is genuine.

Step 5: Reply While the Job Is Still Fresh

Time: 20 minutes for the first batch.

Open the review queue twice a week and reply with details already shared publicly by the customer. Keep the reply to two to four sentences:

"Thanks, Jamie. Glad Luis could replace the water heater at your place that afternoon. I'll pass your note to the crew."

Do not paste the same thank-you under every review. Do not add an address, price, or problem the customer did not mention publicly. Google says replies are public, the reviewer is notified, and the reviewer can update the review after reading the reply.

Step 6: Run a Weekly Proof Loop

Time: 30 to 45 minutes a week after setup.

An active profile gives customers recent proof the business is open and doing the work it claims to do.

  • Monday: upload one real job photo with the service and area in the caption
  • Wednesday: publish an Update, Offer, or Event with one clear action
  • After each job: send the review link while the experience is fresh
  • Friday: answer reviews, check holiday hours, services, and links

Google does not say weekly posting is a direct ranking factor. But posts can show on Search and Maps, and current photos, hours, and offers help a customer decide whether to call.

How to Measure It

Record the starting position for the same five searches from the same locations. Then track calls, website clicks, direction requests, and the queries shown in Business Profile performance for four weeks.

If the profile still does not move, inspect the website pages and links pointing to the business. Google includes links and reviews in prominence, so the profile is one part of the local result.
